They analyzed the billions of interactions between recruiters, companies, and professionals that occurred on LinkedIn during 2016. Then they identified the top candidates most likely to attract recruiters and analyzed their skill sets to determine the top skills they predict will dominate in 2017.

Cutting edge technology skills continue to top the list. For the second year in a row, cloud and distributed computing have been in the #1 position, followed by statistical analysis and data mining (#2). To remain competitive, organizations need employees with these skills to assist them in understanding accumulated data. Job seekers in the technology field will have increased opportunities if they have these tools.

Mobile development and user interface design skills are in demand. Companies are increasingly looking for employees who can make their digital products easy to use and stand out from the competition, as is evident in the rankings of mobile development (#3) and UI design (#5).

The demand for marketing skills is shifting. While companies will always need talented marketing employees, the demand for certain types of skills has dropped in the rankings. For example, SEO/SEM, marketing campaign management and channel marketing did not make the top ten in the U.S. rankings; however, SEO/SEM held the #9 position globally. These shifts perhaps suggest that the supply of individuals with these specific marketing skillsets has met employers’ demand.

Compare the 2017 list of skills that got people hired to the 2014 LinkedIn skills list and the top 100 LinkedIn skills from 2012 people to have on their LinkedIn profile. The skills people include on their profile tend to very general, such as management, marketing, sales, Microsoft Office, accounting, events, etc., which reinforces the idea that specialized skills are what get your resume and profile noticed and more likely to get an interview.
